Artist's Statement

Earth as a natural body is subject to an immense amount of recurring stress. Seismic activity, erosion, and volcanic eruptions are all catastrophic events that wreak havoc in an instant. Over millennia, these natural catastrophes create mountains, canyons, and unique rock formations. My intent is to celebrate the raw beauty of geological phenomenon, by exploiting clay's ability to replicate these processes. I employ similarly stressful and expressive techniques to explore the relationship between clay and the terrestrial landscape. Beaten, cut, and torn, clay is a unique in its ability to render my abuse into cragged stone fragments. This allows me to fully express my own interpretation of stress while creating surfaces that resemble beautifully weathered landscape. All of my mountainous forms are made from assorted high fired ceramic clay bodies, modified with various aggregate and organic materials. The addition of these materials add to the clay's integral structure and create additional texture. The final finish is developed through the layering of soda and wood ashes which melt into a glaze at during the final firing process.
